'It's not about the bike'.
In contrast to the UK, cycling in India is not primarily about sport or the glorification of the bike; it’s primarily about transport, utility and the special pleasure of close proximity to the landscape, the city and the people that the cyclist meets along the way.
To understand cycling in India, Chris rented a bicycle; he chose a
traditional Indian bicycle - a BSA roadster - a classic bicycle that
carries an aura of reliability, simplicity and endurance. The stage was set for engaging directly with aspects of contemporary Indian
culture.
Chris found beauty wherever he travelled. But it wasn’t necessarily a striking or stunning beauty; it was the beauty of a certain
peacefulness - of serenity, even.
The photographs in this exhibition reflect the quiet beauty, the peace and tranquillity - as well as the pleasure of being - that can be
experienced by cyclists in India. They refer to a culture that enjoys both the efficiency and opportunity that the bicycle affords.
